The National
Nutrition Institute (Cairo Egypt) is a Governmental Public enterprise
established since 1955.
It is one of the 18
Organizations affiliated to the General Organization of Teaching
Hospitals and Institutes (GOTHI) which is affiliated to the Egyptian
Ministry of Health (MOH) having HE the Ministry of
Health as the Chairman of the GOTHI.
The NNI has a long
history of experience in monitoring of the nutrition situation, food
consumption, nutrition habits, nutrition – related morbidities ….etc
within the Egyptian community.
Having conducted many national surveys
and field studies it has a rich archive of studies and publications.
The NNI was
designated in 1992 to become one of the worldwide WHO / Collaborating
Centers in human nutrition especially in Research & Training. This
designation has been ongoing since then in recognition of the
Institutes activities, uniqueness and expertise both at National and
Regional levels.
The Institute also
plays a major role within the National Food Safety & Control system as
it is responsible for registering & licensing special dietary foods
and also for its involvement in establishing and updating national
food standards.
The institute
provides preventive and curative services through its outpatient
clinics in various specialties. NNI also is a major partner with MOHP,
MOE, MOSS and UN Agencies such as WHO, FAO, UNICEF, WFP, UNESCO, UNU
in planning & implementing & monitoring nation wide nutrition programs
such as the flour fortification of Baladi Bread Flour with Fe &
Vitamins, the national Salt iodization, the School Feeding Program,
the school Fe supplementation program. Vit. A deficiency prevention
program to mothers & infants after birth ……etc.
NNI also has a very
active Training and Capacity Building program through its unique
Training center which provides training courses to national and
regional health / nutrition workers.
The unique Food analysis laboratories
within the institute provide services to all researchers to analyse
food items and the Institute also updates, the National Food
Composition Tables every 10 years.
Many Publications are issued yearly by
the Institute in many specializations.
The National
Nutrition Institute is considered the main National Authority
/Organization with nutrition and Food Safety technical and advisory
capacity in the Egyptian Government (MOH) for Nutritional Sciences.
The Mission
is to:

Encourage,
foster and maintain the highest standards in the practice of human
nutrition.

nutrition capacity building programs through training courses,
workshops and seminars for health providers in Egypt.

Develop and
implement innovative practical nutritional assessment and intervention
strategies.

Control and
manage nutritional deficiencies in Egypt.

Raise food and
nutrition awareness among the Egyptian population.

Conduct food
quality assurance and conformity to standards for all supplementary
food production processes in Egypt.

Conduct field
research and surveys to monitor the nutritional status in Egypt.
-
Work in
collaboration with other nutrition units in Egypt and the Middle East
for nutrition capacity building.
