Introduction
Nutritional
well-being is fundamental to achievement of the social,
mental and physical potential of individuals and
populations. Malnutrition embraces both under and over
nutrition contributing to several diseases that negatively
affect human productivity and prosperity. However,
malnutrition and its devastating consequences can be
significantly reduced through well-conceived polices and
carefully developed and implemented food/nutrition programs.
As we progress into the new millennium, programs for
improving the food/nutrition situation have become essential
activities within the different governmental sectors
(health, agriculture, education etc.) for national
socioeconomic development plans. While programs for
improving community nutritional status are also increasingly
seen as integral activities of local government, NGO's and
bilateral agencies, the success of these programs depends to
a large extent on both professional knowledge and management
skills of the key personnel, who carry responsibility for
planning and management.This training course offers
opportunity to qualify and strengthen.
Medical clearance
All
participants must undergo a complete medical examination not
more than two months prior to enrollment. Results must be
sent to the Management Board (address indicated herein
above) before participants are allowed to register. Payment
for the medical examination is the participant's
responsibility.
Climate
The climate in
Cairo is generally dry and subtropical. July is the hottest
month and January is the coldest. There is noticeable
temperature difference between night and day, and among the
various regions in Egypt.
Goal and
general objectives
The
goal of this training course is to enhance participants'
intellectual and practical skills to manage nutrition
programs using multi-disciplinary approaches and activities
that lead to improved community nutrition situation, with
particular emphases on participants' work areas.
Upon
completion of the course, participants will be able to:
• Identify the
importance of integrating nutrition/health components into
national and community socioeconomic development plans.
• Plan and conduct community field surveys using different
quantitative and qualitative methods. Use appropriate skills
and
techniques for community organization and mobilization.
• Apply integrated management approaches using innovative
programmatic practices in solving community food/nutrition
problems.
• Use communication and training skills for effective
nutrition and health program purposes.
• Apply skills in planning and conducting communication
activities essential for nutrition and health programs.
Course content
and organization
The course
contains the following six learning modules; each of which
is organized and evaluated independently.
Module I: Introductory
Module (2 weeks).
It gives an
introduction to the importance of food/ nutrition/ health
component within socioeconomic development plan context and
MDG, refreshment of essential knowledge in nutrition
science, overview of major nutrition problems throughout
lifecycle and basic prevention strategies besides discussion
of relevant issues in nutrition.
Module II: Planning and
Management for Nutrition Programs (2 weeks),
this module
includes study of essential management and administration
(principles and methods), how to plan integrated nutrition
projects/ programs for community development, including
implementation steps, monitoring, budgeting and evaluation
systems.
Module III:Communication
& Training (4 weeks),
this module
focuses on the acquisition of communication and training
skills and how to plan and organize communication extension
and promotional activities using computer based programs,
(including social marketing planning model, concepts and
principles).
Module IV: Nutrition in
the Community, (6 weeks),
it consists of
two sections. The first (2.5 weeks), focuses on various
aspects of community work and organization (approaches to
community nutrition, community organization and
mobilization, practical qualitative RAP and quantitative
assessment methods for community nutrition problems, their
etiology and the strategies and interventions for their
solution). The last (3.5 weeks) are spent in the field for
assessment of health and nutrition status in a real
community setting ,data analysis, tabulation; and
presentation.
Module V: Supportive
studies, (2 weeks)
to study the
subjects of epidemiology, Biostatistics and computer skills.
The emphasis is on applicable epidemiology and statistics
knowledge and hands on computer sessions to gain useable
skills in SPSS, word …...etc
Module VI: Participant
individual project, (2weeks),
students are
supervised step-by-step to formulate a proposal which
responds to a real-life problem existing in their own
countries. The finalized project should be relevant,
feasible and technically sound and will be assessed by a
panel of experts.
Course Participants
The course targets middle and supervisory level managers and
personnel involved in food and nutrition programms and
activities, with work experience in the field of nutrition
for at least 3 years. Professionals from sectors such as
health, agriculture, community development, education and
planning, having various educational and professional
backgrounds, are invited to apply

in English language and Basic computer skills should also be
prerequisites

Diploma, examination and
academic regulations
Participants of
the course either gain a training diploma certificate or an
attendance certificate. The diploma certificate is awarded
by WHO and the National Nutrition Institute to those who
successfully pass all the exams, the field work results and
presentation and the final in-country individual project
presentation.
Accommodation
This is a
non-residential course however, the average cost of lodging
and living expenses for students in Cairo/Egypt is
approximately $1250/month. Guest houses, furnished flats or
hotels, are available and located close to the National
Nutrition Institute. Help in securing accommodation can be
arranged upon request.

Funding/Sponsorship
Candidates are
advised to approach their employer and/or any
relevant body or
regional offices of WHO, UNICEF, FAO, UNDP

Tuition
Tuition fee (For non
national) is US $ 4000. This amount includes registration
fees, certificate on completion of training, access to
libraries and computer facilities, experienced training-unit
staff, academic supervision visits to other institutions,
field work and social events

Training
Methodology and Facilitators
The course
strives to use interactive learning
methodologies building on trainees previous
experiences and full participation. The various
methods used include: lecture /discussion,
seminars run by trainees and facilitators,
individual and group exercises, practical work
and trainees individual presentations. In
addition there is an opportunity for actual
field work, and practice in a rural community
setting.
The course facilitators are selected from the
National Nutrition Institute, top universities
and other institutions. In addition, guest
speakers from national and international
organizations, i.e.. WHO, FAO and UNICEF and
from other countries will be invited to discuss
special issues. |
