Introduction

Nutrition is considered an integral part of patient care, along with medical, physical, social and psychiatric aspects. For many patients food and nutrition therapy is the single factor or one of several factors used to restore good health. In many cases nutrition therapy may even replace drug therapy. It is quite noticeable that well qualified, well trained health care professionals able to meet nutritional needs of patients are rare and scarce in number within the region. This not only includes dietitians but also qualified well trained physicians and nurses whose responsibility towards patients requires their understanding of the relation between nutrition and diseases and the importance and methods of adequate and suitable nutrition therapy of patients.

The National Nutrition Institute/ WHO Collaborating Center for Research and Training in Nutrition is one of the most unique organizations in the Region in this field and has hosted many Regional and National Training Courses in Nutrition, qualifying, health professionals from various countries and different backgrounds in Nutrition. Its unique specialty and experience allow it to be “The Institute of Excellence” in nutrition research and training. There are many well qualified staff working in the Institute with experience and capabilities in the different aspects of Nutrition including Therapeutic Nutrition which is an  essential  specialty in the Region.

General objectives of the course:

The aim of the this course is to develop intellectual and practical skills of its participants to be able to:

 Identify the various components of nutrition and principles of diet planning in health and disease.

· Apply proper nutritional management of patients suffering from various nutrition related disorders.

 Apply recent methods and techniques for nutritional assessment of patients. 

NB. Basic and Advanced courses are available for each training module

Medical clearance


All participants must undergo a complete medical examination not more than two months prior to enrollment. Results must be sent to the (address indicated herein above) before participants are allowed to register. Payment for the medical examination is the participant’s responsibility.
 
Climate
The climate in Cairo is generally dry and subtropical. July is the hottest month and January is the coldest. There is noticeable temperature difference between night and day, and among the various regions in Egypt. Medical clearance

·         Nutritional Requirements & Malnutrition Disorders.

·         Nutritional Assessment.

·         Diet Planning.

·         Nutrition in Diabetes Mellitus.

·         Nutrition in Diseases of the Liver and Gall Bladder.

·         Nutrition in Renal Disorders.

·         Nutritional Management of Obesity

·         Nutritional Care in Food Allergies

·         Nutritional Care in Stress, Burns and Surgery

·         Nutritional Care in ICU & CCU

·         Nutritional Considerations in Infections and Fevers

·         Nutritional Care of Cancer Patients.

·         Nutrition in Various Metabolic Disorders

·         Nutrition in Cardiovascular Diseases, Hypertension & Hyperlipidemia.

·         Nutrition in Diseases of the Gastrointestinal Tract.

·         Nutrition in Psychological & Neurological Disorders

·         Nutrition in  Various Allergic Disorders.

Course Participants

The course targets program officers who are responsible for or involved in planning and implementing programmatic activities for improving the food and nutrition situation of population groups, whether at national, provincial or district level, with work experience in the field of nutrition for at least 3 years and also Physicians/Dietitians/Nurses working with patients in general or specialized hospitals or wards .

Professionals from sectors such as health, agriculture, community development, education and planning, having various educational and professional backgrounds, are also invited to apply for the course.

Language: Competence in English language is required.

NB. Course in Arabic are also available

Course Duration :

 10 weeks ( Tailored    according to modules requested by different    participant groups  ).

Funding/Sponsorship

Candidates are advised to approach their employer and/ or any relevant body or regional offices of WHO, UNICEF, FAO, UNDP and NGO's in their country.

Tuition


Tuition fees include registration fees, certificate on completion of training, access to libraries and computer facilities, experienced training-unit staff, academic supervision, visits to other institutions, field work and social events.

 Training Methodology and Facilitators


The applied learning methods are relevant, interactive and suitable to the learning objectives. This includes lecture/ discussions, group discussions individual and group exercises; demonstrations; field visits; case studies.
 Applicants should submit:

·          The enclosed application form, duly completed.

·         A certificate of proficiency in the English language (for applicants from non-English speaking countries).

·         The Management Board will only consider fully documented applications .

Applicants will be informed about acceptance in proper time before the course. Places are limited to 20 and offered to suitable qualified candidates who secure the financial support.
